Color Contacts A-Z

How do I choose the right color contact lenses diameter?

by Globo 12 Sep 2024

Color Contacts Diameters

The diameter of the contact lens (DIA) refers to the overall width of the contact lens, that is, the distance from edge to edge of the contact lens, usually measured in millimeters (mm). This size determines the size of the contact lens and how comfortably it covers your cornea and part of your sclera (the white part of your eye).

The diameter of your contact lens is very important because it affects how well and comfortably the lens fits on your eye. If the diameter is not the right fit, it may cause the contact lens to move too much or cause discomfort. Usually the diameter of soft contact lenses ranges from about 13.0mm to 14.5mm.

Colored Contacts Lenses Graphic Diameters (G.DIA)

The Graphic Diameter (G.DIA) of colored contact lenses refers to the diameter of the colored area on the contact lens, that is, the range of the colored part covering the eye. Unlike the overall diameter of the contact lens, the tinted diameter only refers to the portion of the contact lens that is colored and is also usually measured in millimeters (mm).

The size of the tinted diameter will affect the visual effect of the wearer's eyes, especially the visual proportions of the pupil and iris. For example, a larger tint diameter can make the eyes appear larger and more pronounced, while a smaller tint diameter can produce a more natural effect.

Typically the tinted diameter of colored contact lenses ranges from 12.0mm to 13.8mm, depending on the design of the lens and the desired visual effect. Choosing the right tinting diameter should be based on personal needs, such as whether you want your eyes to appear larger or the color to stand out more.

Horizontal Visible Iris Diameter (referred to as HVID)

The iris diameter of Asians is usually between 11mm and 12mm, but the specific value may vary from individual to individual. Iris diameter refers to the distance from edge to edge of the iris, which is the size of the colored part of the eye.

The size of the iris affects the overall appearance of the eye, especially when choosing colored contact lenses. Knowing your iris diameter can help you choose the appropriate tinted diameter to achieve a more natural visual effect.

Misunderstandings❌

Lens diameter (DIA) is often confused with coloring diameter (G.DIA), believing that larger lens diameters will enlarge pupils. This is a misunderstanding. Lens diameter (DIA) ≠ magnification effect.❗

The magnification effect depends on the color diameter (G.DIA)❗
